V.F.W POST 5290


                                          WHO ARE WE

The V.F.W. has a rich tradition in improving the lives of others through our community service and special projects. Our membership roll include 652 members who served our country under hostile conditions during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Granada, Southwest Asia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. Our members reside primarily in Rockdale, Gwinnett, Newton, Henry, and Dekalb Counties with others living throughout the United States. We are the largest VFW Post in the Northern half of Georgia and also the only Post to have six Department of Georgia Commanders within it's ranks. The Post also has had three "Mr. VFW" awardees.

                         THE HISTORY OF VFW POST 5290[

Rockdale County VFW Post 5290 was chartered in Conyers on February 6,1946 with 71 members and received it's Perpetual Charter October 22,1965. Our Ladies Auxiliary has had four of it's members serve as Ladies Auxiliary Department of Georgia President. The Ladies Auxiliary  has won numerous awards on the State level including Outstanding Auxiliary President, Outstanding Committee Chairman, and their Buddy Poppy displays have also won first place in various categories. VFW Post 5290 and it's Ladies Auxiliary have Perpetual Life Memberships Chartered to the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. The Decatur VA Medical Center's Vice President of Volunteer
Services is a volunteer from our Post and he is also the National Service Officer of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and an award winner in the National Paralyzed Veteran's Wheelchair Games. Members of our Post Honor Guard  also serve as the VFW Department of Georgia's State Honor Guard which is in the Atlanta Veterans Day Parade.  They also participate in many other opening ceremonies, events and parades.
We adopted a Georgia National Guard Infantry Company deployed to Iraq, providing Christmas packages to all of the troops, and provided gifts and food to their families left behind and in need.
